“Complacencies of the peignoir, and late coffee and oranges in a sunny chair...” from Sunday Morning by Wallace Stevens, 1915.

This existing townhouse in Chelsea, New York was once the residence of the poet Wallace Stevens, and the inspiration for his famous poem, ‘Sunday Morning’. Our work involved the historic preservation and restoration of existing exterior and interior details and the original parlor entrance which were altered significantly over the centuries.

A loft space with a mezzanine was created by previous owners in place of the original garden. New diaphanous stainless steel stairs were added to connect all of the levels, allowing the owners to arrive from the historic parlor entrance into the main living areas. A monumental fire place, contemporary open kitchen and an adjacent modern garden were added to further delineate the new modern character and scale.
