Rockaway - Combined Fire House/EMS Building

"'Rings of Smoke' - Black rings of brick wrap the entire building inside and out to symbolize the raising of this building from the ashes of September 11, 2001. The open window at the front of the building is our way to connect to the many spirits lost, in the sky. The hole they left in our lives will never be filled..." - Beyhan Karahan, Architect

This new Fire / Emergency Medical Service Station combines four units of the Fire Department of the City of New York under one roof:  Engine Co. 265, Ladder Co. 121, Battalion 47 and EMS Station 47. The 19,000sf, two-story building houses 180 FDNY personnel. Offices, dormitories, EMS bunkrooms, kitchen fitness and locker rooms wrap around the main apparatus room shared by the firemen and the EMS personnel.

The building parti is based on creating walls parallel with Rockaway Beach Boulevard and the nearby edge of the Atlantic Ocean. All the spaces are designed to receive daylight and to benefit from the natural ventilation of the sea breezes in order to reduce the energy consumption of this 24-hr building.
