Open Space Study for Lower Manhattan

Open Space Study for Lower Manhattan
Public/Institutional/Educational
This timely intervention to preserve and enhance the unique historic character of TriBeCa resulted in a creative and coherent plan which is still in various stages of realization.

Working with the Community, a sensitive program for designing unused and undeveloped public space in TriBeCa was created. The project included the study of eight undeveloped triangular open spaces, a potential boulevard on the widened Greenwich Street, and the connection over West Street to the Hudson River Promenade at the end to Chambers Street.

The morphology of TriBeCa results from the confluence of the "Manhattan" grid with the grid generated from the edge of the Hudson River. Triangular spaces result as the major West side Avenues originate or terminate in collision of geometries in the TriBeCa area.

The designs for the three spaces studied in detail intend to celebrate the origins of Manhattan's Avenues in TriBeCa, thus linking the neighborhood to its larger context.
